DIGITAL VIDEO MOVIEMAKING FOR THE BEGINNER
Learn the basics of Digital Video Moviemaking from two professional filmmakers/teachers. You will shoot, direct and edit a short scene and leave with a DVD copy of the scene. You will learn and do the jobs of director, director of photography, sound recordist, slate person and editor. The course will take place in four days over two weekends. Each day, lunch will be provided. Students will need to have an actor available for their four-hour shoot on the second Saturday of the Workshop.

Perry Schwartz, Executive Producer/Instructor, is the chairman of Communication and Performing Arts at the Takoma Park Campus. He has been a theatre and film director for the past 30 years. His production company, Ol' Black Bear Productions, has produced several short films, including the 1992 Rosebud Award winner for Best Narrative Film, SOAP OPERA. Schwartz has an MFA in Filmmaking and Theatre Directing from Ohio University.
Edmund Baxter, Lead Instructor, Cinematographer/Editor, is the president of Washington Picture Works. His company has won numerous production awards. He holds a BFA in Filmmaking from New York University. He is producer of the award-winning narrative short, LEAST OF THESE.
Together, Schwartz and Baxter are working on a feature composed of three short films. LEO AND MARS and ALL KRYSTAL are completed. SNAKE is in production. RATS, a video adaptation of the play of the same name by Israel Horovitz, has just been completed.
SCREENWRITING FOR FILM AND TELEVISION
This two-day seminar will focus on various styles of writing for film and television. Beginning with a screening of the film THE COLOR OF COURAGE, based on Kathleen McGhee Anderson's family's participation in a groundbreaking housing discrimination decision in the Supreme Court, the seminar will look at how a writer tackles bringing real-life stories to the screen. Though clips and discussion, the class will also focus on the differences between writing for film and writing for television, writing drama versus writing comedy, and writing an adaptation as opposed to an original screenplay. This class will not be a straight lecture course; students will be expected to raise questions and participate in discussions. Students should also come prepared with a script idea to be discussed and analyzed.

Writer Kathleen McGhee Anderson grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in a politically active family that fought a housing discrimination case and won a landmark Supreme Court Housing decision in 1948. Thurgood Marshall served as the family's attorney, and the ruling struck down racially restrictive covenants throughout the country. Anderson wrote the screenplay THE COLOR OF COURAGE based on this story. USA Pictures produced the resulting film, which starred Linda Hamilton and Lynn Whitfield.
Anderson's credits as a professional writer include the feature films SUNSET PARK (for Tri-Star), ESTHER (for Caravan Pictures/Touchstone) and THE BEAUTIFUL LIFE (for Paramount); work on such sitcoms as BENSON, WEBSTER, CHARLES IN CHARGE and GIMME A BREAK; and several plays, which have been produced at the Crossroads Theater.
With an undergraduate degree in English from Spelman College and a Master of Fine Arts in Film Directing from Columbia University, Anderson also received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Spelman College in April 2005. She is currently writing an original screenplay and working on her first novel.
SUMMER MOVIE PRODUCTION WORKSHOP 2006

This comprehensive movie production experience offers aspiring filmmakers a chance to put their vision on videotape. In this intensive three-week Workshop, participants will learn the nuts and bolts of motion picture production as they conceive, develop, write, prep, shoot and edit a short narrative video project as a group. Come to the first meeting with story ideas. You'll learn to:
Work with professional actors
Work with a director of photography and an editor
Shoot on time and on budget
Learn Final Draft Screenwriting and iMovie Editing Software

A new monthly showcase of the Mid-Atlantic Region's best filmmaking
Presented by AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center and Montgomery College.
MARS is open to works produced in the Mid-Atlantic region (including MD, DC, VA, DE, PA, WV and NC) and accepts entries for screening at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in the following formats: 35mm, 16mm, DigiBeta, HDCam, D5, DVC Pro and DVCam. Works in progress may be considered.

Confirmations, Receipts, and Schedule Changes
If you register by fax or mail, your confirmation notice will be mailed after
payment is received. Be sure to mark your calendar with the dates of the
courses for which you have registered. If you do not receive confirmation prior
to the beginning of a course, you are responsible for contacting the Registrar
at 301.650.1407.
Cancellation Policy
If you wish to cancel a course registration, you must submit a request in
writing no later than two working weeks prior to the beginning of the course.
No refunds will be granted after that period. Refunds may take 8 to 10 weeks to
process and will reflect a 10% handling charge.
Other Requirements and Policies
AFI and Montgomery College reserve the right to refuse admission at any time to
those who do not meet the published requirements or who are deemed disruptive
or disrespectful to other participants or instructors. AFI and Montgomery
College reserve the right to replace pre-announced instructors or speakers with
professionals of equal caliber.
How to Register
All registrations will be taken by Montgomery College Takoma Park Campus, not
by AFI. Please register early. All registration is on a first-come, first
served basis. Class size for some sessions is limited; space cannot be reserved
without payment in full and is not guaranteed at the door.
