Historic Gothic Revival meets urban contemporary at the Emily Morgan Hotel. Adjacent to the famous Alamo, this 14-story hotel is a modern oasis surrounded by Texas history. Polished stone floors and Texas limestone blends with traditional mahogany furnishings and custom fabrics. A transparent stone fireplace flanks a commanding central staircase.

Insider tip:

In February of 2000, workers in the Alamo discovered a series of frescoes painted on one of the walls in the 1700s. Historians believe that friars living in the former mission directed workers to paint in a style prominent in Mexico City during the 1500s. Guests can view the frescoes for free.

The Emily Morgan offers 177 guestrooms. Urban-contemporary decor showcases mahogany furnishings, high-backed headboards, and armoires with 27-inch TVs. Drawing room-style doors lead into granite-and-tile bathrooms with chrome accessories. Architecturally, no two rooms are alike. Some have high ceilings; others have dramatic curves and moldings. All rooms have views of the city or the Alamo and its gardens.

Amenities include cotton waffle bathrobes; floor-to-ceiling curtains, granite-topped desks, and ergonomic chairs. Accommodations also have CD players, complimentary Wolfgang Puck coffee, and USA Today is delivered Monday–Friday. Bathrooms are stocked with bathrobes and Aveda bath products.

ORO Restaurant and Bar - This warm and sophisticated restaurant overlooks the gardens of the Alamo and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Comfortable booths are lit with votive candles for intimate conversations. Specializes in Italian cuisine such as fresh pasta, Tuscan steak, and custard flan. Tall tooled-leather and wrought-iron stools pull up to the bar, which is topped with Mexican onyx and lit from beneath to create a soft glow. Room service—available 24 hours daily—includes Emily's own in-house pizza delivery. There is also a weekend breakfast buffet.
