Cincinnati has a reputation as being one of the most singularly typical places in all of the USA, a place where pretty much everything is average, from the cost of living, to the waistline of the locals, in fact Cincinnati is so typical, so representative of almost every conceivable indicator used in determining population, that the city is used as something of a yardstick by American consumer groups who use the people of Cincinnati as test subjects for almost everything, from new versions of Starburst through to testing public reaction to the latest fashions in trouser length.
Perhaps then, this remarkable normality could be turned to the advantage of the city, Cincinnati's tag line could become "City of the Future", and then surely people would flood in from all over the world, keen to see what the shops will be selling in a year, and what the Coca-Cola might taste like next month. The only problem with this is that Cincinnati gets extremely cold in winter, and I cannot imagine that people there would be terribly keen to try out next summer's shorts and T-shirts on a freezing January day.
Amongst the many attractions in Cincinnati, the most popular, and one that all visitors to the city should make the attempt to visit during their stay is the world famous Cincinnati Zoo, which specialises in breeding endangered animals for reintroduction to the wild and has an enormous collection of species on display including tigers, lions and elephants, as well as plenty of rarer species such as pangolins. The zoo's conservation programme has become the model for sustainable conservation of species around the world, and even if you disapprove of zoos in general, you should at least wander past the gate and make a donation.
Cincinnati also offers a wide range of cultural and historic attractions to keep you occupied during your stay, and these include the Taft Museum of Art, and also a couple of great museums of local, national, and natural history. Another attraction well worth seeing is the Underground Railroad Museum, which is dedicated to the good people who helped escaping slaves from the Deep South to escape into freedom in Canada.
In the area around Cincinnati, you can visit a number of interesting sites, and just a short drive from the hotels in the down town area, the Paramount King's Island theme park offers a great day out for all the family, with several thrilling rides based on television and film characters such as Lara Croft.
