If
you often suffer from digestive symptoms
such as heartburn, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain or distention,
constipation, or diarrhea you may be one of the many people
worldwide affected by a motility disorder.
Gastrointestinal
(GI) motility is defined by the movements of the digestive system,
and the transit of the contents within it. When nerves or muscles
in any portion of the digestive tract do not function with their
normal strength and coordination, a person develops symptoms related
to motility problems.
GI motility
plays an important role in the health and well-being of persons
of all ages. However, the role of GI motility is often misunderstood
and sometimes overlooked in diagnosis and treatment of many disease.
This website is intended to help increase understanding of GI motility
disorders.
The site is
sponsored by the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal
Disorders (IFFGD), a nonprofit education and research organization.
A portion of the information provided is in cooperation with the
American Motility Society (AMS), a professional organization of
physicians and researchers. We are grateful to the AMS for their
contributions to the care and treatment of persons affected by GI
motility disorders, and their support of the efforts of IFFGD.
