Suggested Self Drive Tour Itinerary From St Louis
Day 1 St. Louis Arrival
Arrive in St. Louis, pick up your rental car, and drive to your hotel. If time allows, you may want to take in some of the many interesting sites of St. Louis such as the Missouri History Museum and the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, the famous Arch and the Museum of Westward Expansion.Hotel: Red Roof Inn
Day 2 St. Louis-Kansas City
Distance: 272 MilesAs you begin your journey west following in the footsteps of the fabled Louis and Clark, stop at Camp Wood and see the site where they wintered as they prepared the crew for their upcoming journey. Next head to St. Charles, the site of the expedition's first campsite. Visit the historic district and the Lewis and Clark Center as well as the reconstructed white and red pirogues. You may wish to visit the Daniel Boone Home near Defiance or Arrow Rock, a completely preserved town founded in 1829.

Day 3 Kansas City-Sioux City
Distance: 294 MilesHead north to St. Joseph, once the eastern terminus of the fabled Pony Express. Then, experience the prairie landscape as Lewis and Clark saw it in the Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. In Omaha, visit the fascinating Western Historic Trails. In Ohawa, see a reproduction of the corp's keelboat. Also visit the column erected to honor Sgt. Floyd, the only member of the corps who lost his life on the expedition.

Day 4 Sioux City-Pierre
Distance: 306 MilesSee one of South Dakota's quirkiest attractions, the Mitchell Corn Palace in Chamberlain. Visit the Akta Lokota Museum dedicated to the culture of the Plains Indians. In Pierre, see the site where Lewis & Clark had their first council with the Sioux Indians. Pierre, South Dakota's capital, has a lovely promenade along the Missouri River.

Day 5 Pierre-Bismarck
Distance: 212 MilesHead north towards Mobridge, where you will find a monument to Sacajawea. Close by is the grave of famous Indian leader Sitting Bull. Experience the Great Plains on a drive across the beautiful Standing Rock Indian Reservation, ancient homeland of the Sioux. At Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, visit a recreation of a Mandan village. In Bismark you may want to enjoy an evening cruise.

Distance: 230 MilesToday's highlight is One Fort Mandan Historic Site, where the corps wintered among the Mandan and Hidatsu tribes. Visit the Knife River Indian Villages and head due west to Theodore Roosevelt National Park where you can enjoy some of the most spectacular scenery North Dakota has to offer.

Day 7 Willison-Billings
Distance: 240 MilesToday you will track the return voyage of William Clark, whose signature carved in rock, can be seen at Pompey's Pillar, a landmark located along the Yellowstone River. In the morning, visit Fort Union Trading Post National Site. Arrive in Billings, a quaint Western town, by late afternoon.

Day 8 Billings-Yellowstone

Distance: 300 MilesTravel through magnificent "Big Sky Country" today to the headwaters of the Missouri State Park where the expedition began its overland travel, away from the river that had taken them across the plains and into the mountains. Take a boat ride through the spectacular gates of the Rocky Mountains before arriving in Great Falls. Visit the Lewis and Clark National Historical Trail Interpretive Center as well as the Great Falls themselves.

Distance: 210 MilesCross the Rocky Mountains today over Roger's Pass on your way to Missoula, home of the University of Montana, and elite training school for forest fire fighters. You are now in the country of the Flathead Indians which Lewis and Clark encountered.

Day 12 Missoula-Lewiston
Distance: 207 MilesContinue across the mountains on the Lolo Trail in the footsteps of the Corps of Discovery. In this rugged terrain, the men suffered terribly and were near starvation.
