Spotlight

President's FY 2007 Budget Proposal for the Forest Service - Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act Extension


The President’s fiscal year 2007 budget includes a legislative proposal that would grant the Forest Service authority to sell small tracts of forest land that are isolated or inefficient to manage due to their location or other characteristics. The money received from the sales (up to $800 million) would go towards funding states and counties impacted by the loss of receipts associated with lower timber harvests on federal lands. The legislation would amend the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act for an additional five years. more »

Annual Photo Contests Offer Opportunity to Showcase Visitor's Experience on Federal Lands for New Federal Recreation Pass and National Recreation Trails


First Photo Contest for Federal Recreation Lands Pass Begins

Do you have the winning photo for the 2008 "America the Beautiful" National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass ? Does your photo from one of the nation's most magnificent national forests, parks or monuments capture the essence of the recreation experience available to all from America's beloved lands?

Beginning in 2007, a new interagency recreation pass authorized by the Recreation Enhancement Act will be available to recreation visitors for use at any federal recreation site which requires a fee. Beginning in 2008, the annual pass will feature a photo showcasing a federal recreation site on lands managed by the Forest Service or the Department of Interior's land management agencies which include the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Park Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Photo Contest Focuses on National Recreation Trails

American Trails is sponsoring the 2006 contest for photographs of National Recreation Trails across the country. We're looking for good photos of trail users as well as special facilities, art on the trails, management issues, construction, and volunteers. We also want to see entries that cover the many types and uses of National Recreation Trails throughout America. Good photos, in high resolution digital format, of any designated National Recreation Trail are eligible. The goal is to highlight the diversity of the NRT’s and to make more Americans familiar with these great trails. The deadline for entries is August 31, 2006.
