Description:
Blue
has survived the re-entry stage and is now well established as
one of the fun places to eat in Edinburgh’s theatre quarter.
Poised above Atrium, and another living testimony to the durability
of the brasserie concept, Blue offers a value for money menu which
takes no prisoners when it comes to imagination. A starter of
cream of spinach soup, with nutmeg and mascarpone sets the tone
and thereafter it can be anything from sandwiches through to a
cornfed chicken dish with leek risotto and bacon dressing. The
Malteser ice cream sets new standards of indulgence in a country
that gave us the deep-fried Mars Bar. Don’t expect overmuch
choice on the wine list, but all save the super fussy will be
catered for, starting at around £13. More to the point are
11 wines by the glass, all below £4.

Description:
A
not inexpensive essay into the French style and some very good
dishes are offered. Monkfish wrapped in prosciutto with chilli
sauce, game sausage on a blue cheese mash and chocolate cake
with white ice cream are pretty par for the course. The food
is straightforward and reasonably priced as a result of which
they have a loyal and happy clientele. Ducks also has a distinguished
wine list which has earned it Awards. The sort of place one
can dine in comfort with no rushing about, friendly service
and a firm feeling of relaxation.

Description:
Fish
does not remain simple here as a rule. A salad of seared salmon
sashimi, for instance, might emerge with ginger and orange aioli,
mizuna leaves and candied chillies. Nor for that matter do the
meat dishes thoughtfully provided for the wilful, also the desserts
that could include Turkish delight in brandy. The emphasis is
very much on elaboration, always risky, but at Fishers it never
seems to fail to work. Service is friendly and competent. The
wine list deserves close attention, with the emphasis on bottles
below £20. Decent vins de pays house wines go from £9.75.

Description:
Here
at The Cavalry Club they go to great pains to reincarnate by
means of gastronomy the spirit of the Raj. The linen is crisp,
the hangings and the furnishings are evocative, the staff are
deferential and in the uniform of the period and the food is
just sublime. Any old buffers still around from that era should
make the pilgrimage and enjoy a meal amidst sheer unashamed
nostalgia, well camouflaged by dignity. Prices are impressively
reasonable and the set price three course lunch at £6.95
must be amongst the best value in Edinburgh. House wine is £10.50
a bottle.
