DAPPING THE DADDY PROVIDING
GOOD SPORT ON LOUGH O'FLYNN
This week saw the start of
the mandatory Catch and Release of Salmon and Sea Trout in the
Limerick fishery district.
All anglers in the
Shannon region are invited to record details of the fish they
release. Subject to verification, anglers will receive a
specially commissioned metal pin to commemorate their catch.
Recent floods have moved a late run of Salmon into the River
Feale and a few salmon have already been caught and released in
recent days. Salmon fishing has improved on the Mulcair River
also.
Dapping the Daddy is
providing good sport for trout anglers fishing on Lough
O'Flynn. Fishing has been slow on the Mullingar lakes. Lough
Sheelin is still producing fish to dry sedges in the evening
time. A trout of over 3lbs claimed first prize in the
Conway/Conroy Cup trout competition fished on Lough Ree.
TIGHT LINES!
MANDATORY CATCH & RELEASE OF SALMON AND
SEATROUT COMMENCED IN THE SHANNON REGION ON SEPTEMBER 1st
Anglers are reminded that mandatory catch and release
of Salmon & Seatrout and
other restrictions will commence in the Shannon Region from
September 1st, , please familiarise yourself
with the information listed as 'new' below.
WHY CATCH & RELEASE ?
Salmon
survival is under increasing threat due to a wide range of
environmental factors and overexploitation. Action is required
immediately to halt this decline. Wide-ranging measures have been
introduced in recent years to help in the restoration of salmon
stocks and the Government has now brought in a new Bye law that
restricts salmon angling in the Limerick and seven other Fishery
Districts to catch and release from the 1st of September
until close of season.
This Bye-law
requires that fish are returned unharmed to the water
and bans the use of worms as bait. All hooks used must
be single and barbless.
All anglers in the Shannon region
are invited to record details of the fish they
release. Subject to verification, anglers will receive
a specially commissioned metal pin to commemorate
their catch. Email enquiries to
catchandrelease@shrfb.com
with any questions.

THE CONWAY -
CONROY CUP...
Photo:
Paula and Martina Conroy present the Conway-Conroy Cup to
Stephen Conway watched by Michael Conway and Dominic Conway
(Captain of the Day) after the recent Athlone Anglers
Competition.
The last trout
competition of the year took place on Sunday 3rd
September and was for the Conway-Conroy Cup. The day
itself was pretty much perfect for fishing with
fresh breezes, overcast conditions for most of the
day and little rain to keep everybody cool. As usual
with the Conway-Conroy Cup there was a large turnout
and twenty six boats started that morning at
Gallagher’s Boat Shed with the aim of landing the
big one. This competition was slightly unusual in
that anglers had the choice whether to have their
fish weighed on the shoreline and released back into
the lake or they could bring them into the
presentation venue, Higgins Bar, as usual and have
them weighed there. This proved very successful and
most of the anglers availed of the option to have
their fished weighed on the lake and released back
into the waters of Lough Ree.
Given the weather
conditions it was always probable that the fly
fishermen or the dappers would come out on top and
this was proved correct when Stephen and Michael
Conway weighed in a fantastic trout at 3lb 1oz to
claim first prize and the fantastic Conway-Conroy
Cup. Second place was awarded to Helen and Dominic
Conway for their trout which weighed 2lb 5ozs and
this was the first time that they had had a fish to
weigh in on this competition over all the years that
it has been running. The competition for the next
three places was very tight with only one ounce
separating them from each other and it was James
Kearney and Michael Sheriff who claimed third spot
for their trout which weighed 2lb 2ozs. James Conway
and Michael Mullins claimed fourth place when their
trout was only one ounce lighter at 2lb 1oz and the
final place went to Paddy and Alan Mc Evilly who
were only one ounce further behind with a trout
weighing 2lb.
The competition
was sponsored by the Conway and Conroy families and
our sincere thanks to them for their continued and
generous support without which this competition
could not be run. We would also like to thank
“Cuddly” Paul Donovan and his staff for their
excellent hospitality that evening when the weigh in
and presentation of prizes took place that evening
in Higgins Bar on Pearse Street. We would also like
to thank Dominic Conway who was the Captain of the
Day and who was kept busy on the lake weighing and
releasing fish.
ANNUAL TABLE
QUIZ...
The Athlone
Anglers Association annual table quiz will take
place next Friday Night, September 8th,
in Potters Bar in Irishtown. The quiz will begin at
9pm and will finish when everybody has completely
exhausted their brain power answering the questions
set by our very own Quizmaster Tom Cunningham. This
is always a fantastic night out and with the entry
fee at only €25 for a team of four it is also great
value considering that first prize will be €100,
second prize will be €80 and third prize will be
€40. There will also be plenty of spots on the night
and a raffle for some fantastic prizes and as the
quiz is open to everybody a large attendance is
expected so get there early to book your table.

SCREAMING REELS
ACROSS THE MIDLANDS...
Here we are and the month
of September is up and running. We have
plenty of rod bending action to report on
this week so we will keep the text short
and to the point. Over the past week we
captured local and visiting anglers with
some splendid catches. The competition
scene was quite busy on Sunday with Lough
Owel anglers in action.

LOUGH OWEL....
Last Sunday September 3rd
saw the last official Lough Owel Trout
Preservation Association fly-fishing
competition for 2006. Up for grabs on the
day was the Clonhugh Cup & the Tommy
McCormack Cup for the angler with the best
gross weight during the year in L.O.T.P.A.
club competitions. Conditions on the day
were quite good and some super trout were
landed. Well known Owel angler Brendan
Murray topped the day with a cracking Owel
trout weighing 1.490kg ( 3lbs 4oz). This
was closely follow by P.J. Farrell of the
famous angling family from Gainstown. P.J.
landed a super trout weighing 1.020kg, 3rd
was popular competition captain Ross Mc
Keown with a fish 0.945kg,and in 4th place
was Pat Brady with 0.865kg.The winner of
the Tommy McCormack Cup was Steve Turner
from Athlone. Steve had a very good season
on Owel and when many a fellow angler was
struggling to produce Steve was in top
form all season. At the presentations at
Mullally's Club Chairman Andy Boyle
thanked all who supported L.O.T.P.A.
competitions over the season, especially
all who sponsored prizes. His fellow
officers, and Jack Doolan who insured all
boats were ready on competition mornings
for those who needed them. The
presentation was followed by some light &
strong refreshments which went down a
treat with all present. There was just one
other bit of business on Sunday evening on
Lough Owel. Some weeks back the Leinster
Shield was fished on Lough Derravaragh.
This is a much sought after award with the
top teams in Leinster seeking the title of
Leinster Champions. Congratulations to
Lough Owel on winning this years award,
the team were Stan Mc Keown, Chris Mc Keown,
Brendan Murray and Andy "Nodger" Boyle (
Team-Captain ).

UPCOMING EVENTS....
The competition calendar
will be on overtime in the coming weeks as
the trout season closes in. We will do
our best to keep you up to date on these
events. If any club wants to highlight
their competitions please contact us a
week in advance or the Monday morning
prior to the event. While we are on the
subject of upcoming competitions, the
Chairman's Competition on Lough Lene will
be fished on Saturday 30th September. This
is actually the last day for wild brown
trout fishing on Lene as it closed two
weeks earlier than Ennell, Owel etc. It
proved a huge success last year and I have
no doubt it will be a cracking day this
year. More on this as it draws nearer.

Mulcair system.
There was a flood on the
Mulcair over the past few days which moved a
few salmon. Angling guests of Millbank House
were pleased with the trout fishing on the
Bilboa river, a tributary of the Mulcair.
Nymphing proved the best method.
ShRFB reports for the
RIVER FEALE CO KERRY
Conditions are ideal for salmon fishing
on the River Feale following a good flood
over the past few days. While a bit heave
for fly today, the river is expected to be
in good fishing order for a couple of days
to come. A few salmon were caught and
sportingly released over recently in
compliance with the mandatory catch and
release of salmon introduced from September
1st. If you would like to record details of
