Valuable Presentation Skills

The top 10 characteristics of a good presenter:
1. Knowledgeable
2. Well prepared presentation
3. States points simply and precisely
4. Interactive (include questions)
5. Engaging/enthusiastic
6. Warm and personable (makes eye contact with audience, and doesn't hide behind the podium)
7. Humorous (No jokes! Use irony, stories and "we've all been there" examples. Be subtle, and only use relevant cartoons.)
8. Delivers information that the audience can't read straight from a book
9. Doesn't go over time alloted, or worst-speeds up when running out of time
10. Doesn't read from the slide (practice, practice, practice)

For guidelines on preparing a good presentation, visit The Key Steps To An Effective Presentation. For a personal consultation on becoming a better presenter, contact Ed Neal with the UNC Center for Teaching and Learning.
