Netbeans Releases Cross-Platform IDEs With Support for Java 2
By Scott Clark

NetBeans Wednesday released DeveloperX2 2.1, a full-featured Java Integrated Development Environment which supports Sun's Java 2 platform.

DeveloperX2 2.1 allows developers to create advanced Java Foundation Classes GUIs. NetBeans also announced a concurrent version, Developer 2.1, that still supports Swing 1.1 and version 1.1 of the Java Development Kit.

NetBeans was designed for the visual development of JFC applications. The tool supports all stages of application development, including visual design, coding, compiling and debugging in a comprehensive visual programming package.

The IDE is available for all platforms which support JDK 1.1 and 1.2, including Windows 95/98/NT, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, OS/2, AIX, SGI Irix and others. Since NetBeans is based on JFC and JavaBeans Components, all components of the IDE are actually JavaBeans. This enables the user to easily customize the interface, modify component behavior and add new components.

NetBeans Enterprise will enable developer teams to create full-scale distributed applications. NetBeans Enterprise will include several additional modules:

  • version control systems support (integration with multiple vendors)
  • database connectivity - JDBC
  • Enterprise JavaBeans support - EJB
  • distributed computing support - RMI and CORBA
  • directory services - JNDI
