Car wash raises money for Tsunami fisherman
01/12/2005
Portaferry lifeboat crew have donated a fully equipped fishing boat to one of the fishermen in Sri Lanka who lost his craft during last December’s Tsunami.
The RNLI crew raised the funds by holding a car wash last February. A spokesperson for the lifeboat station said:
‘Because of the magnitude of this disaster and our close links with the local fishing community the lifeboat crew felt that they would like to provide practical assistance to one of the fishing families in Sri Lanka who had lost their means of income.’
Thanks to the generosity of the crew and the local community, the fisherman is now back in business.
The new lifeboat is named Blue Peter V– Portaferry in recognition of the lifeboat crew and Portaferry’s Atlantic 75 lifeboat supplied by the children’s programme and funded by children throughout the UK.
