Met Office celebrates 150 years of history

150th birthday   The Met Office was formed in 1854 to provide information about the weather and sea currents to the UK maritime community. We have come a very long way since then.

Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research
The centre forms part of the Met Office and is a world leader in climate research. The dedicated scientists form a team that is unrivalled in the quality of the work it does.

Computers - past and present
Computing technology has made giant leaps forward over 30 years and the Met Office has been at the forefront of this!

Radar
In its early days the development of radar is closely linked to conflict. Forecasters have benefited enormously from the introduction and proliferation of radar in tracking the weather.

What was the single event that resulted in the creation of the Met Office?
The Royal Charter was a ship that went down with the loss of nearly all on-board.

D-Day anniversary
Group Capt Stagg: the British meteorologist who played a major part in the D-Day story.

How is a forecast put together? What goes into the finished article we see on TV?

Weather balloons
Man has been trying to measure the state of the atmosphere for centuries. The weather balloon has been the method for doing that for many years, carrying instruments to the edge of space.

Ten things you didn't know about the Met Office (and were perhaps afraid to ask!)
