Clipper ’05-’06 Round The World Yacht Race

The Clipper ’05-’06 Round The World Yacht Race is a nation-versus-nation around-the-world sailing race, taking a fleet of ten identical 68-foot sailboats ten months to complete. Victoria, Canada has sponsored the only Canadian entry and the only Canadian port in the Clipper Round the World

Yacht Race, the world’s longest sporting event both in distance and time. This race involves ten cities and ten nations and an international crew of amateur sailors, some of whom had never set foot on a boat before signing on for this adventure. The Victoria, Canada yacht is part of the fleet which set sail on September 18, 2005 from Liverpool, UK.

The Clipper fleet arrived in Victoria on May 4, 2006 with the Victoria, Canada yacht taking first place! The ten identical yachts were in Victoria until May 17th, 2006 for an eight-day stopover and crew changeover.

Follow the race online as the Victoria, Canada navigates her way back to Liverpool, UK.

Fast Facts
:

The principle:

Ocean yacht racing need not be the exclusive domain of professional yachtsmen. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is one in which paying amateurs can participate and compete on a level field.

All of the boats are identical, as are their crew compositions (equal number of crew (17), equal percentage of men and women, and a professional skipper.)

The Yachts:
Each boat represents a city and a country. The 10 yachts in the race represent: Liverpool, Durban, Western Australia, Singapore, Jersey, Glasgow, Victoria, Qingdao, New York and Cardiff.

The new fleet of ten 68 ft yachts was built in China, from a single mould, and took two years to complete. The sailboats are 8 ft longer than the original Clipper fleet, but weigh 2 tons less. They also have a taller rig and larger sail area, making them up to 25% faster than their predecessors.

The new Clipper 68’s provide their amateur crews with the fastest round-the-world ocean racers in the non-professional field. They are equipped with the latest electronics and communication technology, providing everything from instant links with home to computerized satellite navigation and tactical information.

The Route:
This is the longest route of all round-the-world races, taking ten months to complete, and starting and ending in Liverpool, UK. Port stopovers include:
-Liverpool
-Cascais
-Salvador
-Durban
-Fremantle
-Singapore
-Subic Bay
-Qingdao
-Victoria
-Panama
-Port Antonio
-New York
-Jersey

The Name:
The race is named after the famous tea and spice clippers that plied the trade wind routes around the globe.

History:
Over 800 crews have sailed part or all the way around the world with Clipper since the first race in 1996. Many started with no knowledge of sailing, but all finished as experienced sailors.

The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race takes place every two years. It was previously held in 1996, 1998, 2000 and 2002.
