GREAT LATE SEASON RUN OF SALMON ON THE RIVER FEALE AND RIVER MULCAIR

Torrential rain and high winds from the tail end of Hurricane Gordon resulted in severe flooding in places last week. The continuing inclement weather since has provided ideal conditions for salmon fishing on our spate rivers. Over the weekend the River Feale fished very well with an abundance of salmon caught and released. There was also a great run of fish into the River Mulcair with both visiting anglers and locals enjoying lively sport. Trout angling has been fairly good also with some good sedge fishing reported on Lough Sheelin during the calmer interludes. Quality but not quantity described fishing in the I.T.F.F.A. Leinster National Qualifier on Ennell. Staying with Lough Ennell last Sunday the club members were in action for the popular Christy Sleator Cup trout competition. Good croneen trout fishing was reported in the dropping floods on the Camcor River Birr over the week.   TIGHT LINES!

MANDATORY CATCH & RELEASE OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT COMMENCED IN THE SHANNON REGION FROM SEPTEMBER 1st

Anglers are reminded that mandatory catch and release of Salmon & Seatrout  and other restrictions has commenced in the Shannon Region from September 1st, , please familiarise yourself with the information listed as 'new' below.

WHY CATCH & RELEASE ?

Download Catch and Release Leaflet for further information (2.9 MB) If you don't have a broadband connection, please request a copy by emailing catchandrelease@shrfb.com Salmon survival is under increasing threat due to a wide range of environmental factors and overexploitation. Action is required immediately to halt this decline. Wide-ranging measures have been introduced in recent years to help in the restoration of salmon stocks and the Government has now brought in a new Bye law that restricts salmon angling in the Limerick and seven other Fishery Districts to catch and release from the 1st of September until close of season.

Commemorate your catch with this catch and release pin from the Shannon Regional Fisheries BoardThis Bye-law requires that fish are returned unharmed to the water and bans the use of worms as bait. All hooks used must be single and barbless. All anglers in the Shannon region are invited to record details of the fish they release. Subject to verification, anglers will receive a specially commissioned metal pin to commemorate their catch.  If you don't have a broadband Internet connection, please request a copy by emailing  to catchandrelease@shrfb.com

LEINSTER NATIONAL QUALIFIER....

Photo: Leinster I.T.F.F.A. Qualifier winner Tony English - photo courtesy of Michael Flanagan, Mullingar

Lough Ennell was the venue last Saturday September 23rd for the  I.T.F.F.A.  Leinster National Qualifier. On the day one hundred and eleven of Leinster top fly anglers ventured out on a wet and blustery Lough Ennell. Over the season the lake has proved a tough nut to crack for many a fly angler and the Leinster Qualifier was no different. As the norm with Ennell its quality and not quantity in trout competitions. Nine anglers returned fourteen trout on the day. I teamed up with one of Mullingars well known fly anglers Tony English. Not only is Tony a class angler but is highly respected in the fly-tying world. So much so that the Ennell trout took a great shine to Tony's flies. On the day the Mullingar angler landed two cracking Ennell trout and even though I caught no trout myself I had the pleasure of netting Tony's best fish of the day. (See Pic). Tony's combined weight was 4.8lbs,and in second place was another top class local trout angler Paddy Ward from Multyfarnham. Paddy finished with 3-fish weighing 4.7lbs and Tony Doherty from Clane came 3rd with 4.5lbs. At the presentation of silverware in Whitebridge Bay, I.T.F.F.A. Leinster Chairman Dr Billy Waldron thanked all anglers  who competed on the day, the ShRFB. and L.E.T.P.A.

CHRISTY SLEATOR CUP...

Staying with Lough Ennell last Sunday the club members were in action once again. This time up for grabs was the popular Christy Sleator Cup. On the day Tullamore angler Conor Lynch topped the day with a super trout weighing 2.36lbs. Conor landed 3-trout on Sunday for a combined weight of over 6lbs. In second place was Noel Gilhooley with a trout weighing 1.31lbs.This is Noels second placing in the last two Ennell competitions which is a great achievement.

LAKELAND END OF SEASON...

Where has the year gone. It seems like only last week we were in Caffrey's at the Lakeland End of season competition. Well boys & girls the big day is next Sunday October 1st and it's all hands on deck for this event. Fishing is from 10-30 am with weigh-in in Caffrey's Bar & Lounge Mount St Mullingar at 8pm sharp on the night. Venues are Lough Ennell, Owel and Derravaragh, with normal check-in points for each lake.

LOWER SHANNON AREA

Richard Keays,  Millbank House, Murroe,  Co Limerick,  Ireland http://www.millbankhouse.com  Email to  info@millbankhouse.com Tel 061 386115 reports for the River Mulcair system.

Salmon fishing has picked extremely well on the Mulcair. Two Belgian anglers, angling guests of Millbank house caught and released 4 fish between them, best estimated at 13lbs on the long field  and on the Newport river. Local anglers all had fish. Mick Doherty a local angler had 3 fish yesterday.  It's looking good for the final few days of the season.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER FEALE CO KERRY

There was great salmon fishing reported with lots of anglers out particularly over the weekend. There were lots of fish caught and released providing much sport for local anglers. A few more days will see the end of the season and water levels are rising again at time of writing. If we don't get too much more rain anglers should enjoy further sport before the close of season on Saturday next. TIGHT LINES!
