Angling & Fisheries News of Local & National Interest - 2006

GOOD COARSE FISHING IN PLACES DESPITE THE RECENT INCLEMENT WEATHER

The tail end of hurricane Gordon lashed parts of the country for a short time last week, bringing with it very heavy rain. Water levels have risen significantly with some local flooding since the weekend. More heavy rain is on the way as we write, but all the while it's very mild for the time of year with temperatures peaking at 20 C. Not as much feedback this week as the season advances. From reports received coarse angling was quite good in places despite the conditions. Anglers from Cambridgeshire managed some lovely Bream in the  ......

GREAT LATE SEASON RUN OF SALMON ON THE RIVER FEALE AND RIVER MULCAIR

Torrential rain and high winds from the tail end of Hurricane Gordon resulted in severe flooding in places last week. The continuing inclement weather since has provided ideal conditions for salmon fishing  on our spate rivers. Over the weekend the River Feale fished very well with an abundance of salmon caught and released. There was also a great run of fish into the River Mulcair with both visiting anglers and locals enjoying lively sport. Trout angling has been fairly good also with some good sedge fishing reported on  .....

MANDATORY CATCH & RELEASE OF SALMON AND SEA TROUT COMMENCED IN THE SHANNON REGION FROM  SEPTEMBER 1st

Commemorate your catch with this catch and release pin from the Shannon Regional Fisheries BoardSalmon survival is under increasing threat due to a wide range of environmental factors and overexploitation. Action is required immediately to halt this decline. Wide-ranging measures have been introduced in recent years to help in the restoration of salmon stocks and the Government has now brought in a new Bye law that restricts salmon angling in the Limerick and seven other Fishery Districts to catch and release from the 1st of September until close of season.

This Bye-law requires that fish are returned unharmed to the water and bans the use of worms as bait. All hooks used must be single and barbless. All anglers in the Shannon region are invited to record details of the fish they release. Subject to verification, anglers will receive a specially commissioned metal pin to commemorate their catch.  If you don't have a broadband Internet connection, please request a copy by emailing  to catchandrelease@shrfb.com
