The Fishery
Loch an Dochais is derived from Irish, meaning ‘Lake
of Hope’ was first developed in 1995 as an experimental coarse fishery and is
just under a hectare in size. It has a maximum depth of two metres. The lake
holds good stocks of tench and from catch returns received by the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board over the past few years, tench to 3lbs+
are well within the scope of the angler and have been reported. The lake also
holds a stock of small perch. The use of maggots, worms or sweet corn is
recommended and pre-baiting is advised. Although there is no close season best
results are achieved between April and October.
Loch an Dochais has been developed to facilitate anglers with disabilities. It hosts an annual All Ireland Trout Fishing Match for anglers with disabilities
in May every year. First prize is the Mary Robinson Perpetual Trophy.
The lake is an ideal site for supervised children to fish in safety and a number
of trout matches are held for junior anglers each year. In addition, the Shannon Regional
Fisheries Board provide angling tuition and related educational
initiatives here in August every year, please enquire.
Access and Facilities
This lake has a spacious car park, nine
fishing stands specially designed for wheelchairs with stops and raised sides,
connecting a lining concrete pathway, with protective kerbing, serving
approximately one third of the shoreline. Shrubs, trees and grasses
have been planted which adds to the natural beauty and gives shelter to the
venue. It is immediately alongside the country road about 8 kms from
Kilcormac. There is an information notice board on site.
To get there
The lake is located to the right (west) of
the Cycle Path road when travelling south from the R357 towards Kilcormac.
