The Fishery
Abbeyshrule Bridge is
located downstream of Ballnacarrow Bridge described in this guide. There is a fast streamy section of water near the bridge but is not a particularly productive
water. There are some decent swims upstream, but are difficult to access.
Recently the canal has been repaired and refilled with water. There are good
numbers of roach starting to congregate here which is positive news for anglers.
Travelling on the road to Abbeyshrule from Tenelick Bridge, continue past the
sign for White's Garage. There is a big sweeping bend on the river here, situated on
your left hand side. It tends to be an early year section, best April to May, as
excessive weed growth becomes a problem in high summer.
There are other ' hot spots' Go through
Abbeyshrule. There is a bad double bend over the Canal bridge, turn right
at the second bend in the direction of the airfield. The Canal crosses the river
at this point. Either side of the Aquaduct, fish a waggler down the middle of
the river for goods nets of roach. There is a good head of pike in this section,
which can produce occasional fish to 20lbs+. Alongside and upstram of the
airfield is a good area for pike and roach, but bring your hiking boots !. The
river at this point runs through a peat bog and has deep slow moving areas.
The top three bags of pike came from this area in a recent Pike Federation
qualifying event.
Facilities and Access
Access is at the Road Bridge.
