Lough Gara is quite a large lake located 20 miles from Knock Airport and 5 miles north of Ballaghaderreen. It has about three thousand acres of surface water split into three lakes. This is a noted pike fishery, frequently recording double figure fish to 25lbs +.  It holds very good stocks of bream and roach. Lake depths vary from 3ft to 45ft.

Facilities and Access

There is very good public access on two lakeshores. One is at Clooncunny Bridge on the southern shore of the lake. The second is on the northern shore at Cloonloo.  Facilities include a concrete jetty, 2 boat slipways and 4 fishing stands, including one wheelchair stand provided in the main by the Shannon Regional Fisheries Board. The wheelchair stand is located on the southern shore of Lough Gara about two miles from the village of Monastadan, 5 miles from Ballaghaderreen.

To get there

From Ballaghaderreen take the R293 road north and continue for 3 miles, go straight through the crossroads and continue for 1.5 miles to Monastraden village, turn right in the village for the southern shore and continue for about 2.5 miles. The lake is located adjacent to the road.
