STEELHEAD FISHING KODIAKS ISLANDS KARLUK RIVER:
The fall fly fishing in September through late October features some awesome fly fishing over ocean bright fish. The fish average 11-14lbs with giants caught up to 20lbs each fall. If you like traditional fly fishing over very aggressive bright fish, this is the place for you. All of our fishing is 100% catch-n-release for these truly wild Steelhead. These trips are based out of Larsen Bay at Kodiak Lodge and we do daily fly outs to the Karluk river and overnight raft trips. During the fall we get frequent storms that can move through with rain and high winds so we can not fly on these days we will take you by boat to nearbye rivers to fish for Silvers and Char, No whiners allowed . This time of year only true metal heads looking for the best wild steelhead on the planet need join us.
STEELHEAD FLY FISHING ALASKA PENINSULA'S SANDY RIVER:
The spring fishing mid April through mid May offers Anglers the opportunity to fish over Wild Steelhead in a small pristine river setting with fairly low water conditions. Many of the fish are spotted and then fished to with dead drift techniques of egg patterns, beads and articulating leach patterns. The days are long, and the water is warming up each day. The fishing varies 60% for colored holdover fish and 40% bright silver fish. We also have some resident Char and Rainbows to fish for while testing your nerves for the Steelhead.
THE STEELHEAD RIVERS:
Both these rivers are fairly small to Alaska standards. There just right to throw a full fly line. An 8-9 wt with a couple of sink tips, and a spare floating line will work just fine for the week. If coming in the spring, many anglers choose a 7wt, since the water conditions are much lower. Consider a mixture of glacial gravel and cinder bottoms the home to these giants. The fishing is varied, with large traditional holding pools and mixed pocket water available. Commonly used fly patterns are large brightly colored Purple, Pink and Black Marabou Streamers, as well as Egg Sucking Leaches for the Steelhead. Egg patterns work well for the Char & Dollies using a 7wt fly rod and a floating line.

The Weather on Kodiak Island & AK Peninsula:
The weather in this part of Alaska is unpredictable, and during the fall season can vary from rain to sleet with high winds and even light snow. Be mentally prepared for the worst,- everything else will be a bonus. During October the average daily temperatures range from 40-45 degrees with a few real nice days reaching the mid 50's. Morning temperatures can dip into the mid 30's. Everyone should pack and dress accordingly with layers of Polar fleece and a good rain and wind shell for the outer layer. Don't forget a warm hat, gloves.
Travel to Larsen Bay-Karluk Rivers:
Kodiak Island has daily flights from Anchorage and connecting daily flights from Kodiak city to Larsen Bay airport on Island Air where we will pick you up and drive you to the main lodge near the Ocean front village of Larsen Bay. We highly recommend you stay over in Kodiak city the night before your arrival this gives your luggage time to catch up if lost. Tight connections are a bad thing in remote Alaska.
Travel to Sandy River Alaska Peninsula:
Travel to this remote part of Alaska is fairly simple since Peninsula Air has 3 daily flights to King Salmon and continues on to Sandy River. Originating in Anchorage connecting in King Salmon. You will need to make arrangements with Penn Air in Anchorage, or www.alaska-adventures.net Travel to arrive in King Salmon on the start day of your trip Sunday morning around 9am. You will then transfer to Peninsula Airways Cessna 208 caravan for the 1-1/2 hour flight to Sandy River. The cost from King Salmon is $450pp rd trip.
Alaska Bead Fishing:
Bead fishing has gotten very popular and is a most effective way to catch Alaska Steelhead, Trout and Char trout during the fall salmon spawning season. We have perfected the art of dead drifting beads for trophy rainbows during August, September & October. If you would like to purchase custom beads visit www.troutbeads.com and tell them Alaska Trophy sent you.
