"Never attempt to go through the caves without a competent guide as there are a thousand places in which to get lost," Vic Smith, a guard appointed to the caves, 1911*.
Visitors can only enter the cave on a scheduled tour. No self guided tours are available. See Operating Hours & Seasons for more information on tour schedules.
Tours last 90 minutes. Expect at least 15 minutes for the walk back to your car. Wait times can reach up to two hours during the summer season. Tours are considered moderately strenuous.
A Preview of the Cave for Young Children
If your child is under 42 inches (107 cm) in height or is unable to go on the general tour of the cave, staff can still take you into the first room of the cave so all can experience the cave.
Candle Light Cave Tours -Summer Only
During summer months, the last tour of the day is often conducted by candle light to give visitors a chance to see what early explorers of the cave might have seen as they went from room to room with a candle.
Off-Trail Cave Tours No off-trail cave tours are being offered at this time.
Other Tours -summer only
During summer months, tours of the historic Oregon Caves lodge (Chateau) are conducted by park staff. Tours are given at no charge. Check at the Visitor Center for tour times.
We also offer guided nature hikes during the summer at no charge. Check at the Visitor Center for hike times.
Did You Know?
When visitors came to Oregon Caves in the late 1800's they had to explore the cave by candle light. You can still experience Oregon Caves this on the candle light tour offered 7:00 pm nightly during summer.
