The Casitas Municipal Water District lost the first round of legal battles this week in its effort to sue the federal government and recoup the costs of water lost in the effort to save the endangered steelhead trout.

 

 
On October 4th, a coalition of fishing groups sued the state Department of Water Resources, alleging the agency never obtained the proper legal authority to kill fish while exporting north-state water to Southern California.
 

New research from Canada claims that young wild salmon are dying after swimming through plumes of lice from infected fish farms.  According to the report, concentrations of sea lice are 30,000 times higher around fish farms in coastal waters than in deep waters.

 

 

In a stunning victory for Klamath River fish, Judge Parlen McKenna has ruled that the measures required by regulatory agencies terms for operating four Klamath River dams must be upheld.

 
SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge has restored broad protection to about one-third of national forestland in the lower 48 states, rejecting efforts by the Bush administration to relax a ban on new road building and logging in the most pristine forests.
 

We support Proposition 84 because it will add $180 million to the Department of Fish and Game and the Department of Water Resources for Bay Delta and coastal fishery restoration projects, including $45 million for salmon and steelhead projects.

 
Recent Malibu Creek steelhead surveys revealed a massive decline for juvenile steelhead. Two weeks of exceedingly warm nights is thought the cause.
 

Removing the four PacifiCorps dams on the Klamath River is feasible, safe and affordable a new study released by the California Coastal Conservancy shows.

Pacificorps President William Fehrman announced that the utility is "not opposed" to removal of four dams it operates on the Klamath River.  The announcement comes on the heels of a shutdown of the commercial fishing season due to record low salmon production from the river.  CalTrout and its conservation partners have worked for years to remove the dams that block migration of salmon and steelhead. 

 

The town of Orick has seized the opportunity presented by the passage of Proposition 50 to restore the town's artery, Redwood Creek.
