Interior Secretary Kempthorne to Mark Expansion of Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

On Friday, Oct. 13, 2006, Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne celebrated National Wildlife Refuge Week by announcing the expansion of Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, a premier urban refuge in the heart of the rapidly-growing Metro Denver area. The ceremony formally transfers about 7,200 acres of land from the U.S. Army to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, more than doubling the refuge to nearly 12,500 acres.

The transfer is a milestone at Rocky Mountain Arsenal, which is undergoing an extensive environmental cleanup. The work is about 2/3 complete and expected to be finished in 2011, when 15,000 of the Arsenal’s 17,000 acres would become part of the refuge. The site now hosts 330 species of wildlife, including deer, coyotes, bald eagles and burrowing owls. moremore  en Español

Ernie Pyle’s Home a National
Historic Landmark

The Interior Department has designated the Albuquerque, New Mexico, home of famed World War II journalist Ernie Pyle as a National Historic Landmark because of its significance in interpreting the heritage and history of the United States.

“These new National Historic Landmarks help tell the story of America as a country and of Americans as a people – our land, our culture, our literature and architecture and our struggles,” Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne said. “I encourage all Americans to visit these places and breathe deeply of our history.”  moremore
