Ichthyological research at the Australian Museum focuses on the taxonomy (classification), systematics (relationships), ecology and behaviour of fishes.
The Museum's huge fish collection is the focus of most of the work. Specimens from the collection are also loaned to scientists worldwide to study. The output of much of this research is an increase in knowledge that is often published in scientific papers.
The Fish Department's aim is to increase knowledge and understanding of fishes, and to make this information widely available.
