Program Background & History
The International Program works to increase both trade and consumer awareness of the Alaska seafood industry and its products in vital international markets. The International Program currently has five active regional programs, spanning two continents. Each of these programs is directly managed by highly-qualified overseas marketing representatives. The invaluable expertise of these contracted professionals provides ASMI with worldwide exposure and control over its designated programs.
Since 1987, ASMI has been a participant in federal export assistance programs. This program is currently known as the MAP (Market Access Program) and is administered by the United States Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service.
Together, ASMI, the State of Alaska and the federal government work together to increase volume, value and/or market share through promotional efforts. The International Program is currently striving to accomplish two missions:
- Maintain market share in the face of dramatically increased competition in ASMI's mature markets (Northern Europe, Western Europe, Japan)
- Develop new markets for Alaska products (China and Southern Europe)
Administration of the International Program is performed by a staff of three at ASMI's Marketing Operations Office in the greater Seattle area in Washington State.
