Serving Sizes

2 pounds of king crab will serve 2 to 3 people easily if you're serving with additional entrees. If you're having a crab feast or are serving a group of crab lovers, 5 pounds would be good for 3 people. Usually around 1 1/2 per person is a good starting point.

Storing and Thawing

King crab arrives in the form of frozen legs and claws. Frozen king crab can be kept in a freezer for several months due to it's protective glaze. To thaw king crab, place it in the refrigerator a day prior to cooking it. Left-over king crab should be kept under refrigeration and used within a couple of days.

Size and Packaging

Fisherman's Express has always opted to offer jumbo king crab legs and claws for their quality and meat content. Legs and claws average between 1/2 pound to 2/3 pound each. Legs are packaged in large clear plastic bags making it helpful to store in your freezer. We do not ship broken pieces or tips and knuckles parts, just whole legs and claws.

Our crab legs are separated for your convenience.

Bristol Bay is located in the Bering Sea in the North Pacific Ocean. It is known for it's high seas and terrible weather. Many of the Bristol Bay crab fishermen commonly work out of Dutch Harbor, though many crab fishing boats come from as far as Seattle during the season. As everyone knows, king crab fishing is considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. It takes a lot of courage, luck, and a good captain to come back home with a good catch.

Fishing Seasons

Alaska's main commercial fishery for Bristol Bay red king crab starts in mid-October and generally last for several months. Crab boats now have individual quota amounts assigned to them and they can fish crab at a slower pace than in the past "derby-style" method.

Availability

When king crab is caught it is cooked and blast frozen to capture its quality. This commercial level of processing allows king crab to be kept frozen for long periods of time. Frozen crab is glazed with an outer shell of frozen water to protect it from the elements. Because of the large size of this fishery, Bristol Bay red king crab is available all year round. A small portion of the annual catch is delivered to live tanks for fresh markets.
