Storing and Thawing

To thaw flash-frozen silver salmon steaks, place them in refrigerator for a day. Because they are vacuum-sealed you can also run cold water over sealed fillets to speed up the thawing process. Quickly rinse salmon prior to preparing it. Left-over salmon should be refrigerated and used within a couple of days.

Packaging and Portion Sizes

Our silver salmon steaks are flash-frozen and individually vacuum-sealed for your convenience. They can be stored in your freezer for several months. Steak sizes range from 1/3 to 1/2 lb. packages and are cut at approximately 1 inch thickness.

Serving Sizes

When serving salmon steaks, about 1/3 to 1/2 pound per person is a good portion size. Commonly they are served on a one steak per person basis.

Most of our silver salmon are caught within the Cook Inlet. The Cook Inlet is a rather large body of water that stretches up into Alaska. It was first discovered by Captain James Cook, the famous British explorer. It's east banks are bordered by the Kenai Peninsula where dozens of fishing ports are located from Homer to Anchorage. There are many fishing districts throughout this region with all five types of salmon running through the inlet.

Fisherman's Express is located about 500 yards from the glacier-fed waters of Cook Inlet.  We work closely with a local group of quality-conscious salmon fishermen, buying their fish at the local docks weekly. Together we have strove to bring higher quality salmon to the market. These premium silver salmon are delivered to us, literally, within hours after they have been caught. They are well cared for from catch to market.

Fishing Seasons

Silver salmon is a very abundant in Alaska. These salmon are typically the third wave of fish after the king and sockeye salmon. These silver salmon are caught with careful handling and are kept fresh by "icing them down" until they are either processed and frozen, or sold in fresh markets. Alaskan salmon are caught in the wild, not farmed.

Availability

Alaska Silver is available all year long. Along with fresh markets during the summer, you can find quality processed silver salmon fillets and steaks that have been well handled and are perfect for stocking freezers with. Today's commercial freezing and packaging methods allow salmon to be kept frozen for long periods of time, yet still retaining its quality.
