The Environmental Research and Consultancy Department (ERCD) carries out a range of activities in the field of aviation and the environment, including noise monitoring, noise contour modelling and research into the health effects of noise. Although noise issues tend to be of most concern around airports, the impacts of aircraft emissions on local air quality are also becoming increasingly important.
At our noise monitoring pages, you can learn about the noise monitoring work we do around the London airports. Some typical aircraft sound clips can even be downloaded! You can also find out about our Noise and Track Keeping (NTK) system, which is linked to similar systems at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. Noise and radar data from the NTK system are used in many of our studies.
We are highly experienced airport noise modellers, and employ the official UK civil aircraft noise model ANCON to generate noise contours for the designated London airports, as well as for several regional UK airports. Visit the noise contours page to find out more.
We are experts on the effects of noise on people, having assisted Government with many research studies. We also take a keen interest in the environmental impacts of aircraft emissions.
Our publications page lists all our publicly available documents. Details of how they can be purchased are given.
We have provided a variety of web links to other organisations involved with aviation and the environment.
ERCD offers a wide range of consultancy services, so please contact us if you require advice on the impacts that aircraft can have on the environment.
