Survey Department

Engineering Department

The Department provides specialist advice on all structural and materials design issues appertaining to the certification and continuing airworthiness of all fixed-wing aircraft, rotorcraft, airships, balloons, and microlights.

 

Topics covered under Structural design requirements, strength and deformation, flight and ground loads, gusts and turbulence, stress analysis, structural testing, dynamics, flutter, bird impact damage, runway response, shimmy, structural aspects of crashworthiness and ditching, flight loads monitoring, liaison with EASA.

 

Development of SRG policies on materials, approval of material manufacturers, strength of metallic and non-metallic materials including composites, fatigue, damage tolerance, design allowables, fabrication methods, castings, forgings, corrosion protection, non-destructive testing, lightning protection, laboratory investigation of structural defects.

Flight Department

Flight's responsibilities include research, policy and requirement development, aircraft certification and validation, continued airworthiness and the oversight of industry organisations.

 

In carrying out our responsibilities, of particular interest to us are the handling qualities, aerodynamic performance characteristics and flight deck layouts of airships, aeroplanes and helicopters on the UK Register. In addition to this, Flight Department oversees, in accordance with BCAR A8-9, the safety of flight test activities undertaken by UK organisations - particularly involving prototype aircraft.
