Web Conferencing Glossary



Application Sharing

Classified as a data conferencing feature within a web conferencing service, application sharing lets two or more users work collaboratively on the same application at the same time. The application need only be on one of the users PC's for sharing to others within your web conference allowing both mouse and keyboard functionality to be passed to conference attendees. See also desktop sharing.

Application Viewing

Classified as a data conferencing feature within a web conferencing service, application viewing lets two or more users view the same application at the same time. The application need only be on one of the users PC's for others to view within your web conference session but mouse and keyboard control will be prohibited. See also desktop sharing and application sharing.

Audio Conferencing

Refers to getting 3 or more parties connected together to send and receive information via audio conference. Although typically synonymous with telephone conferencing, audio conferencing can also refer to VOIP or audio streaming.

Conferencing

A meeting for consultation or discussion with 2 or more participants.

Desktop Sharing

Allows for web conferencing users to not only show a single application but rather the entire desktop and display the whole screen. What you see is exactly what the viewer will see too. See also application sharing.

Email Invite

The communication sent via email requesting someone to attend your conference call or web conference.

File Transfer

The copying of a file from one computer to another over a computer network.

Firewall

The primary method for keeping a computer secure from intruders. A firewall allows or blocks traffic into and out of a private network or the user's computer. Firewalls are widely used to give users secure access to the Internet as well as to separate a company's public Web server from its internal network.

Firewall Friendly

Refers to an application's ability to connect using an HTTP-based bypass mechanism which is almost guaranteed to get through firewalls.

Help-Desk Analyst

A person who provides technical support for any aspect of the information systems department, including computer hardware, operating systems, applications and networks. This position requires strong technical background and troubleshooting abilities plus communication skills.

Instant Messaging (IM)

A text-based computer conference over the Internet between two or more people who must be online at the same time. When you send an IM the receiver is instantly notified that she/he has a message and can then respond accordingly.

"Meet Now" Meeting

Refers to an instant web conference session created by the host and intended for attendees to join immediately rather than scheduling in advance and sending email invitations and receiving RSVP's.

Multipoint Video Conferencing

Found in compliment with some web conferencing software, multipoint video conferencing allows for multiple people from different locations to broadcast and receive video and audio over the internet with a PC, microphone and webcam. H.323 and MPEG4 are both integrated multipoint video conferencing technologies in IMConferencing. See also point-to-point video conferencing.

Online Meetings

A similar experience to the in-person meeting but done over the Internet using web conferencing, audio conferencing and video conferencing services in compliment with application sharing and online presentations.

Organizer

Synonymous with host or moderator, the organizer is generally the one that schedules and hosts the conference call or web conference.

Participant

A person attending a web conference or conference call, typically not used when referring to the conference host.

Point-to-Point Video Conferencing

Conducting a conference between two or more participants at different PC's while transmitting audio and video data. For example, a point-to-point (two parties) video conferencing system works much more like a video telephone. Each participant has a video camera, speakers and microphone connected to their computer. Once the two participants have established their video conference connection and enabled streaming, each party will be able to send and receive audio and video service from their web conferencing software. Technical (Tech) Support

Technical assistance from a hardware manufacturer, software publisher, internal helpdesk educational institution or third-party support company. The most important thing to understand about getting help from technical support is the amount of detail you need to supply them. It will significantly help when getting technical support if you are sitting in front of your computer with the application running and on the screen if at all possible. If you receive an error message, either write down exactly what it says or hit "print screen" from your keyboard and paste the image into a Word document.

Toll-Free Conference Call

A meeting via the telephone in which 3 or more parties are connected by a conference bridge to enable everyone connection on the same call. Each participant within the 50 United States and Canada will be calling free of charge as the meeting host will be paying for the call. See also, audio conferencing and teleconferencing.

Web Conference

An online meeting solution with 2 or more participants made possible using web conferencing software. Web conferencing is used regularly in business to host group meetings or live presentations over the Internet rather than travel or commute.

Web Conference Meeting ID

The session ID used for reporting and tracking purposes, the Meeting ID works to identify a specific web conference session; the details (date, time, number of participants, host, etc…) and any session recordings or data associated with it.

Web Conference Meeting Manager
