One day back in 1903, when railroad engineer George "Stormy" Kromer had once again lost his hat to a gust of wind that whipped through his locomotive, he got an idea. He took an old cap from his days as a semi-pro baseball player and asked his wife, Ida, to sew on a few modifications, including a moveable earband that made the cap even warmer and more comfortable when lowered
over the ears.
