Are Men and Women Really from Different Planets?

Author: Kathy Steinemann

Ladies, do you sometimes feel that your man's concept of romance is curling up on the couch with you and swilling booze while you watch the big game together? Guys, do you assume that your girl expects (and needs) candles, flower petals, and soft music with at least 30 minutes of foreplay?

You're both wrong!

Well, maybe you're partly right.

The fact is, many men don't have the slightest interest in sports. They may be more motivated by classical music or opera (think 'Frasier'). Others may become inflamed by an intelligent woman who can engage them in a stirring debate or argument (followed by the inevitable post-spat make-up).

Some women don't need (or want) a warm-up. They can be inflamed by a seemingly mild love scene on a TV program, or one of their guy's adorable quirks. Others will want intimacy after a special moment - like a thoughtful partner remembering the anniversary of their first date.

The point is, men and women are different. But not all men are alike, and likewise neither are all women.

Before you plan a romantic escape together, carefully consider your partner's likes and dislikes. A getaway should have elements that you both enjoy. Unless you are like two peas in a pod, you will have to make some concessions to accommodate each other's tastes.

For instance: if you are planning a fishing trip because one of you likes to fish, ensure that there is a cabin well-stocked with champagne, truffles, dark chocolate, strawberries with whipped cream, a fireplace, and a DVD player with movies that your partner likes. Before you settle in for the evening, use lipstick or shaving cream to scrawl 'I Love You' on the bathroom mirror prior to hitting the shower or Jacuzzi - together.

If your getaway is structured around a New York City shopping spree and one of you doesn't like shopping, plan something for the evenings that your significant other really likes. A Broadway play? Musical concert? Movie premier? Men are often more interested in action films, while women tend to like sentimental romances. Good middle ground here would be a comedy - which should appeal to both of you.

Even more important than where you are going or what you are doing is the way you do it! Pay your partner (genuine) compliments. Always treat one another with respect. Never criticize or belittle. Don't be afraid to show affection in public. Hold hands, whisper private thoughts, gaze into one another's eyes over dinner - and really listen to what the other person is saying. Share a dessert. Get one jumbo milkshake with two straws. Most of all, try to avoid office talk. If you have kids, talk about something else.

A romantic getaway is not simply a place or an activity. It is a state of mind that you create together with love. Treat each other with respect, and every day of the year can be a romantic getaway.

Remember: A relationship is like a rose - not without thorns, exquisite but delicate. With care and attention it flourishes. Neglect can cause it to wither and die.
