Secretary Kempthorne Lauds Court Approval of San Joaquin River Restoration Settlement |
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne praised the decision of U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence K. Karlton, who approved a settlement agreement that would restore 153 miles of the San Joaquin River below Friant Dam. Judge Karlton’s decision ends one of the longest-running environmental disputes in the nation.
“This Settlement closes a long chapter of conflict and uncertainty in California’s San Joaquin Valley,” Secretary Kempthorne said. “Now we can move forward together, opening a new chapter of environmental restoration and water supply certainty for the farmers and their communities.”

Kempthorne Gives Keynote Address at Celebration
of 225th Anniversary
of The Battle of Yorktown |
Yorktown, VA - Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne delivered the keynote address at the 225th anniversary celebration of the Battle of Yorktown on October 19, 2006. Kempthorne's speech was part of the four-day celebration from Oct. 19 to Oct 22 commemorating the climatic battle of the America Revolution. Also in attendance at the event were U.S. Senator George Allen, French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte, Former Army Secretary John O. Marsh,
and U.S. Senator John Warner.
