In a somewhat surprising move the inexperienced, in managerial terms, Marco van Basten replaced Dick Advocaat, who stood down at the end of Euro 2004, another ultimately disappointing international competition for Dutch football.
Van Basten had vowed to rejuvenating the Holland squad and take Dutch football back to its former glory days by re-introduce the attacking, entertaining style which took the side to European Championship success in 1988.
While the football has not been as entertaining as was hoped for it has been
sucessful. Holland remained unbeaten under van Basten until a recent loss
against Italy in a friendly and in the meantime qualified comfortably for
the 2006 World Cup and rose to as high as 2nd in the FIFA rankings.
