
You have reached our Routes Page. The most interesting routes between the main centres of New Zealand have been listed within the North and South Islands.
The routes are described from north to south. These routes can of course be done in reverse order!
We recommend that no more than 3 hours driving be allowed for in one day, to permit stops to view the many wonderful scenic and historic sites on these routes.

North Island
State Highway 2, Pacific Coastal Highway
Down the East Coast of the North Island to Wellington.
State Highway 1
South from Auckland to Wellington
North from Auckland to Cape Reinga via Whangarei and the Bay of Islands.
State Highway 3
Auckland to Wellington via Taranaki (West Coast)
South Island
State Highway 1
South from Picton down the East Coast via Blenheim, Kaikoura, Christchurch, Timaru and then inland from Dunedin to Invercargill
State Highway 6
From Blenheim down the West Coast via Westport, Greymouth, the Glaciers, Haast Pass, Wanaka, Queenstown, then inland to Invercargill.
State Highway 94
Leaves State Highway 1, at Lumsden south of Queenstown, for Lakes Te Anau, Manapouri and Milford Sound.
State Highway 8
Leaves State Highway 1, at Timaru and goes inland via the Mckenzie Country, Lakes Tekapo and Pukaki and Mt Cook, to Wanaka and Queenstown.
State Highway 72
An alternate route that bypasses Christchurch, leaving State Highway 1 at Woodend north of Christchurch and travels inland along side the foothills of the Southern Alps past Mt Hutt Ski Field and via Geraldine to State Highway one again at Timaru. There is a link S/H 72 via S/H 79 to S/H 8 that leads to Lakes Tekapo and Mt Cook.
State Highway 92, The Catlins Highway
This road is an alternate route from Balclutha on S/H 1, around the South East Coast to Invercargill. It traverses, beautiful beaches, provides magnificent views and opportunities to see seals, penguins, rain forest and fantastic views.
