Government Relations
In 1979, a handful of Alaskan business people banded together to rally support for the sale of oil and gas leases in the Beaufort Sea. At that time, environmental activists were attempting to shut down offshore drilling, and it became clear that a responsible constituent-based response was needed to counter the vocal opposition.
Alaska lacked a collective voice for businesses that provided services and products to the oil and gas industry unlike other resource and commerce-oriented groups, so the Alaska Support Industry Alliance was formed.
Since that time, the Alliance has grown more than 400 members strong composed primarily of businesses that are Alaskan-owned and operated, or managed by residents of the state. We serve as a conduit for grassroots action. Our opinion has clout because we are the citizens of Alaska.
The respect the Alliance has earned from lawmakers is a result of a strong constituent base. Alliance members provide jobs for more than 30,000 employees in Alaska.
The Alliance focuses its efforts on three main areas that are critical to the health of the oil and gas industry:
- Stable tax environment
- Availability of public land for development of Alaskas oil and gas resources
- Regulatory and statutory reform
Communication with lawmakers and policy makers is generated a number of ways, including group fly-ins to Juneau, letter writing to legislators and newspapers and providing written and oral testimony on a wide range of resource management and regulatory plans and projects.
