One of the reasons the U.S. Department of State is so respected the world over is that we draw our diplomats and professionals from all backgrounds. After all, our job is to represent America in all its diverse strengths. That's why we welcome individuals from a wide variety of disciplines to apply.

In this section, you will learn about positions with overseas assignments, domestic assignments, positions which require deep subject matter knowledge and specific expertise, and those which suit generalists. You will also find information for positions which are not currently open, but may open at some point in the future, in which case you will already be somewhat familiar with requirements for the position and the application process, as well.

Foreign Service Officer Opportunities

The first step in becoming a Foreign Service Officer is to register for the Foreign Service Written Exam, which is held once a year in the spring. To be eligible, candidates must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 20 and 59, and be available for worldwide assignment. Click here to read more on "How to become a Foreign Service Officer."
