Mechanical systems is a collective term used for the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning), plumbing, and electrical systems of a home. Each of these systems works to provide occupants with modern comforts and convenience—warm and cool air, hot and cold water, and electricity for lights and appliances.

Among these systems, HVAC is the most complex, involving the heating and cooling system itself, the duct system that delivers heated or cooled air from the system to the home, and the ventilation system. Improperly sized or installed HVAC systems can lead to inefficient operation, which in turn leads to high energy bills. Improperly installed HVAC systems can lead to health and safety issues for those living in the home. In addition, a leaky or unbalanced duct system can cause a number of building performance issues, including rooms that are more hot, cold, or drafty than they should be.

Best practices for mechanical systems should consider the interaction between the different systems themselves, and with other systems in the home to ensure a comfortable and safe interior environment, and efficient operating costs.
