Chopok
is one of the biggest and most popular
winter sport centres
situated 15 km away from Liptovsky Mikulas and 60 km from the
Poprad airport. It lies in the upper part of Demanovska
dolina. It is a part of the
National Low Tatras Park on
the northern slopes of Chopok and Deresov
on the height 950
to 2024 m. Ski resort of Jasna stretches on both sides of
the Chopok peak. This area is ranked very high among the most
popular and the largest winter-sport centres of Slovakia. Thanks
to its remarkable surroundings, the area has been classified as
the 1st category tourist resort with international significance.
Here are excellent terrains for
skiing and many different
difficult
ski-running tracks. Slopes are equipped in a
cabin funicular, seat elevators, and ski tows. Ski alpinists have
many possibilities here too. On the northern slopes of Chopok
are located
3 ski areas with the
total distance of 21
km of prepared skiing slopes. The southern side of Chopok
has an general capacity of 3990 people per hour; with its 2 chair-lifts
and 4 ski-lifts it is a suitable area, especially for early-spring
skiing.
In Chopok many competitions were held including the World Championship
in junior skiing, a World Winter Universiade, and many World and
Europe FTS cups. This centre was also a candidate for the 20th
Winter Olympic Games in 2006. The
skiing season usually
lasts from
December 15th until
April 30th.
Tourists can
hire here a ski outfit and all belongings
for skiing, a
ski services and a
ski school are available,
too.
The region abounds in numerous sights, cultural attractions, spas,
thermal swimming pools. The valley of Demanovska Dolina is famous
for its two caves - the
Cave of Freedom and the unique
Ice Cave - both are open to public.
