Installing PHP 5 with Apache 2.2 on Windows

You'll see in a previous blog that I got Apache 2 running with TomCat. Yesterday, I decided to intergrate PHP. Unfortunatley, I ran into pretty much the same issue as I ran into with associating TomCat with Apache: A DLL issue, which provides the error "The requested operation has failed" when attempting to start the Apache server.

The trick to getting PHP working with Apache is that there are multiple DLL files provided with the 5.2 release of PHP.

php5apache2_2.dll

The php5apache2_2.dll file is the DLL you want to use with Apache 2.2. Don't rename it, just point your httpd.conf file to it. You'll read in many places that these are the entries you need to add to your httpd.conf file:

Put this line where you see a bunch of other LoadModule lines (leave the php5_module named just like this, even if you don't install PHP to a C:/php5 folder. The DLL file looks for the name.)

LoadModule php5_module "C:/php/php5apache2_2.dll

Put this line in the block

ScriptAlias /php/ "C:/php/"

Put this line in the block

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phps

Then add index.php to your list of index files (files the server looks for if you don't specify a file, such as if you just go to http://localhost/

DirectoryIndex index.html index.php


Side Note: I opted not to take the CGI approach due to the warnings I've read on the vulnerability this approach opens to hackers.

Another Lovely House

Not ours. My folks! They've got a lovely little house in Northern California. Its in a retirement community, and is perfect for someone, or two someones who'd like to get away and not have to live around the hustle and bustle you find everywhere else in life nowadays.

The good news is, they're moving back down to be closer to my three other siblings. They've loved it there, but a couple hours south has turned out to be a better arrangement. And you kow in retirement, its nice to try out a few different places too.

The house is really, really nice (I've seen it a few times), and as far as California house prices go, it's very affordable.

If you know of anyone looking to move, especially into a nice quiet neighborhood, please forward them the link. I'll post back here again when the house is sold.

House is Sold! We're Moved.

Closing was two days ago. And our move wasn't far. Just a few blocks away. In moving into an apartment, we've aleviated the stress of foundation worries, a/c problems, and the host of other issues that go into keeping a house maintained. The next house we get we'll get when we can afford to hire professionals to take care of it. I do computers; I'm no good at fixing sprinkler systems (I learned this firsthand).

So, everything else aside, we have indeed moved. And although we're only about 3-4 blocks away, we're now in Dallas.

P.S. I just last night got our internet access setup at home (took 2-3 weeks for SBC/ATT/Yahoo to activate service). Also had to increase the security protocol on our wireless (living in an apartment, there are lots more potential hacks into your wireless network).

Apache, Tomcat; Connected at Last

Well, after about 4 or 5 tries over about a 3 week period, I finally got Apache and Tomcat connected. Two or three installs, and three or four configurations later, I finally found a blog last night with about a hundred or more comments on an Apache/Tomcat connection walkthrough.

A few commentors noted they had the same problem as me (after configuring the mod_jk connector module, Apache wouldn't start). One comment, about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way down, had information relating to the JK Module from the Apache/Jakarta site not working with some system setups. They provided a link to another site [XAMPP for Windows] that provides the JK Connector module as part of its installation.

After downloading, and extracting the XAMPP "mod_jk.so" file and placing that in the modules folder, tada! Apache started right up!

I can now begin playing with Struts, Tiles, Java, JSP, Beans, and more...!

I could have setup MyEclipse and WebLogic, which is what I have setup at work, but figured I would learn how to do it this way as well.

Looking to Move - Residentially Speaking

AND, on top of a new job, and a new web host for kdcinfo.com, we (Michelle, Brittany, and I) are looking to put the house up for sale in the next month, and move back into an apartment (we just can't keep up with the maintenance (fees) required by this 1980 luxury home (still not quite sure how my folks did it). Perhaps we'll get another one when we can afford a newer model?...

This is the type of company I have been looking for since Salar, my boss from Owen Consultants, Design Engineering Group (DEG), and Salar and Associates (Salar is the boss that relocated me from Concord to Sacramento, and then to San Diego).

In any case, my first day with Voyager will be on June 6 (I get a 4-day weekend).

My exit with FNC will be quite busy, as I have to teach as much as I can about Graphics Administration, graphic workload reporting, and every other aspect of graphics as I can. Then there's the department's intranet site (web development)...

No one is indispensable, and no one person is truly non-replaceable. Tech Pubs, and Fujitsu, has allowed me to grow in many areas, and I thank them for that.

I'm really, really looking forward to the challenge of my new position. Its probably the single-most biggest challenge I've faced since joining the Regular Army (which, by the way, I consider to be my Bachelor's degree: Then there's the 10 years of 7 days a week, 14-18 hour days I put into my own learning, and the 7 days a week, 10-14 hour days in the 6 years following that).

KDC-Info - Movie Clips: Working Again

My movie (animation) clips are now working again. The AVI files I was using were having a problem on Windows XP machines, so I converted them to MPG, which don't appear to have a problem (however, please let me know if you experience an issue with these too).

Thank you for your patience on this... I know I missed having them available.
