WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Advisory Committee on Voluntary Foreign Aid (ACVFA) was established by Presidential directive after World War II to serve as a link between the U.S. Government and private voluntary organizations active in humanitarian assistance and development work overseas.

Transformational Diplomacy and U.S. Foreign Assistance: USAID's Acting Deputy Administrator James Kunder and Chief Operating Officer for the Office of the Director of Foreign Assistance Dirk Dijkerman will present updates on the foreign assistance reforms during the morning and afternoon sessions.
Foreign Assistance Reforms Discussion Groups: During the public meeting's afternoon session, participants will be provided with an opportunity to take part in small group discussions with ACVFA members and staff from the Office of the Director of U.S. Foreign Assistance regarding the reforms.
Humanitarian Relief and Reconstruction After Natural Disasters: Mark Ward, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID's Bureau for Asia and the Near East, and William Garvelink, Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for USAID's Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance will give presentations on lessons learned from humanitarian relief and reconstruction projects. Particular attention will be paid to the current efforts underway in Pakistan as a result of the October 8, 2005 earthquake and in Indonesia and Sri Lanka as a result of the December 26, 2004 tsunami. Following the presentation, Mr. Garvelink and Mr. Ward will be joined by Rein Paulsen, World Vision's Senior Director for Emergency Response and Disaster Mitigation, Randy Martin, Mercy Corps' Director of Global Emergency Operations, and Darlene Taylor with Pfizer to discuss lessons learned from the perspective of partners and how these may be applied to other regions, particularly after natural disasters and civil unrest.
President's Malaria Initiative: Rear Admiral Tim Ziemer, Coordinator for the President's Malaria Initiative, will provide an overview of the initiative including the progress made to date in the target countries and the multi-faceted approach to the prevention and treatment of malaria.
