The shimmering waters off Marathon, Fl contain
the largest sheltered coral reef system in the United States. If
you want to do some scuba diving, Marathon is the place to be. Clear,
calm water is almost always found no matter how uncooperative nature
may be on the surface. Keep in mind that in the Keys, fish life
is mostly concentrated in depths of 20-45 feet. Marine life frequently
observed in these waters are southern sting rays, great barracuda,
queen angelfish, yellow-striped sergeant majors, black and nassau
grouper, parrotfish, moray eels, and a variety of snappers including
yellow tail. You will find 50 different varieties of coral, as well
as sea cucumbers, sea urchins, sponges, and other oceanic creatures.
Sombrero Reef is part of the living reef
system off Marathon, and is designated a Sanctuary Preservation
Area. There is also the Delta Shoal Wreck site, which contains the
wreckage from several old wooden schooners that sunk in mid 1800's.
