Secretary Kempthorne Kicks Off 2006 Conference on Business Opportunities in the Islands |
Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Conference on Business Opportunities in the Islands on November 13th in Honolulu. "These islands with their rich histories and unique cultures are indeed our economic frontier," Kempthorne told attendees. "They are waiting for the modern-day equivalent of business pioneers to develop this frontier that abounds with so much potential."
On the opening day of the conference, Secretary Kempthorne also held a media availability with Hawaii’s Gov. Linda Lingle and leaders of U.S.-affiliated islands in Honolulu Hawaii on Nov. 13. The Nov. 13-14 conference showcases business opportunities in the seven island jurisdictions for which the Department of the Interior has responsibility. These opportunities include military contracting; contracting associated with U.S. government development grants; and new private sector business development, especially with ongoing improvements to the islands’ business infrastructure. more

Assistant Secretary Allred Announces New Panel to Review MMS Mineral Leasing Program |
Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Land and Minerals Management C. Stephen Allred announced the formation of an independent panel to review and provide advice to the department on aspects of mineral revenue collection from federal and Indian lands.
The new panel will operate under the auspices of the Royalty Policy Committee, an independent advisory board appointed by the Interior Secretary to advise the Minerals Management Service on royalty management issues and other mineral-related policies.

Interior Department Announces Approval of Oil Shale Projects on Public Lands in Colorado |
WASHINGTON— In a major move that will advance the Bush Administration’s efforts to develop the world’s largest oil shale resource, the Department of the Interior has completed analysis on five oil shale research, development and demonstration (RD&D;) projects on public lands in Colorado’s Piceance Basin.
