 Vancouver Island and the Mainland

Island Neighbours

Vancouver
Vancouver is Canada's gateway to the Pacific Rim and has been deemed one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Vancouver is clean, colourful and friendly, with the open cosmopolitan flair that West Coast cities are known for. The buzz of this urban centre is contrasted by its spectacular natural surroundings. Vancouver is bordered by water on three sides, filled with lush green spaces and beaches and is nestled beside the towering, majestic Coast Mountains.

Vancouver is British Columbia’s largest city and Canada’s fastest-growing metropolis. With over one and a half million people, close to half of the population of British Columbia lives in the city of Vancouver and its suburbs which include: Richmond, Burnaby, Delta, Surrey, North and West Vancouver, New Westminster and Coquitlam. Most major cities have a mixed heritage, but few have attracted a more diverse cross-section of cultures than Vancouver.

Whistler
From Vancouver, follow the picturesque Sea to Sky Highway to the resort village of Whistler. Whistler is the busiest winter recreation destination in British Columbia and has repeatedly been named the top Ski and Snowboard Resort in North America. Whistler is nestled amongst the magnificent Coast Mountains and its natural setting is as beautiful in summer as it is in winter.

Whistler attracts nearly two million visitors annually. It is a year-round destination and, despite the phenomenal skiing, more people visit in the summer (May to October) than in the winter (November to April). The average number of visitors per day, however, is higher in the winter. Golf, hiking, mountain biking, swimming and canoeing are only a few of the popular summer activities available in the Whistler area.

Seattle (Population: 3,802,230)
The City of Seattle is located in the State of Washington, on Puget Sound, 182 kilometres (113 miles) from the American-Canadian border. Seattle is the commercial, cultural and advanced technology hub of the US Pacific Northwest and a major port city for trans-Pacific and European trade.

Surrounded by steep hills and mountains, lush forests and greenery and glimpses of sparkling water everywhere, visitors soon learn why Seattle is known as The Emerald City. Seattle is flanked by two major mountain ranges: the Olympics and the Cascades, with Mount Rainier in full view. It is situated on the shores of two large lakes and Puget Sound, with wilderness less than an hour away. Nearby are the San Juan Islands, Pacific Ocean beaches and major rivers. This setting, combined with Seattle’s mild climate, provide abundant recreational opportunities year-round.

Port Angeles
Located on the Olympic Peninsula in the northwest corner of Washington State, Port Angeles is a community of just under 20,000. Port Angeles is a modern community, rich in cultural events, history and diversity. It was officially established as the location of the Custom House in 1861, but its history started long before when the Lower Elwha S'Klallam tribe used what is now called Hollywood Beach as a fishing village. This site is now frontage for the waterfront trail and city pier and the Port of Port Angeles still maintains a vigorous harbour for trade and commerce.
