What is Missing Kids Online Alerts?

The Missing Kids Online Alerts is a small application that distributes Missing Kids Alerts online, allowing this information to reach any Windows computer system that is connected to the Internet regardless of Internet Service Provider or E-mail system used. The Missing Kids Online Alerts is free and a public service of NCMEC with no subscription fee or purchase attached to the application. Missing Kids Alerts will contain official text issued by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and is updated as information becomes available.

The Missing Kids Online Alerts is strictly opt-in, as users have to actively download the application. During the registration process, users have the option to choose which local alerts they wish to receive based on zip code.

How is this different from the AMBER Plan?

The AMBER Plan is a voluntary partnership between law-enforcement agencies and broadcasters to activate an urgent alert in the most serious child-abduction cases. These alerts are only issued when a child abduction initially occurs and they can help spread the word to as many people as possible as quickly as possible. Broadcasters use the Emergency Alert System (EAS), formerly called the Emergency Broadcast System, to air a description of the abducted child and suspected abductor via television, radio, and cable systems. This is the same concept used during severe weather emergencies. The goal of the AMBER Alert is to instantly galvanize the entire community to assist in the search for and safe return of the child.

Conversely the Missing Kids Online Alerts gives us the opportunity to bring continued attention to the plight of missing children long after the initial media focus has faded away. This service also allows NCMEC to offer breaking news on cases that may be months or even years old.
