DOMAIN NAME PASSWORDS (previously called Registry Keys)

A domain name "password" is the password or PIN number used to control access to changes in the operation and management of your domain name. It is issued by the domain name registry at the time the domain name is first registered.

The password can be used to:

  • check the expiry date of your domain name
  • change the Internet location reached by people using your web address or email address
  • change the contact details associated with your domain name
  • change the company authorised by you to make the changes above on your behalf
  • Domain Registration Services is aware that some companies are sending out unsolicited 'Renewal Advice' notices to .com.au registrants. Furthermore, the "renewal advice" notices also often imply that the registrant must supply their password in order to renew their domain name. Please note that this is NOT correct.

    Your registry key is NOT required if you renew your domain name with the company currently listed with the registry as providing your domain name services.

    If you have received a "renewal advice" notice that states you must supply your password for the purposes of domain renewal, it is a good indication that you have not had any previously dealings with that company and that the correspondence, although it may look official, is simply unsolicited marketing which is often considered deceptive.

    EARLY RENEWAL NOTICES

    Domain Registration Services is also aware that some companies are sending out unsolicited renewal notices up to 10 months before your domain name is due to be renewed.

    You should be extremely careful about how you renew your domain name. If your domain name was registered through Domain Registration Services, renewal notices will be forwarded to you within an appropriate time frame and will not require your password.

    Should you have any questions relating to the above consumer alert please feel free to contact this office.

    If you believe you have:

    a) received unsolicited marketing material with regards to your domain name renewal, or;
