On Way to Asia, Gutierrez to See NOAA’s Efforts in Hawaii to Preserve Ocean Resources

Washington, DC – U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today said he will travel to Korea, December 12-13, and China, December 13-15, to participate in separate bilateral discussions to promote increased trade ties and expanded access for U.S. exports, and address U.S. trade concerns involving market access and intellectual property rights (IPR) protections. On his way to Asia, Gutierrez will stop in Hawaii, December 8-9 to visit several Department of Commerce National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) facilities involved in protecting marine wildlife, as well as to tour the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. SECRETARY CARLOS M. GUTIERREZ ANNOUNCES BILL PROENZA AS NEW NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER DIRECTOR

Washington, DC - In a press conference today at the National Press Club, Secretary Gutierrez announced the successor to Max Mayfield, outgoing Hurricane Center Director who joined via satellite from Miami. Bill Proenza, Incoming Director, and Brigadier General David L. Johnson, Director of NOAA's National Weather Service, look on as Gutierrez praised Bill's ability to be a "calm and trusted voice in the eye of the storm." (Full release)
GUTIERREZ STATEMENT ON AL FRINK, ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR MANUFACTURING AND SERVICES
Washington, DC (Dec. 6) - U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez today announced that Assistant Secretary for Manufacturing and Services Al Frink, the first to hold that position and who has provided tremendous leadership towards helping to unleash American business competitiveness, will resign his office effective January 31, 2007. GUTIERREZ NAMES MEMBERS OF NEW ADVISORY
PANEL ON MEASURING INNOVATION
Washington, DC (Dec. 6) - Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez has named 15 business and academic leaders--including six Fortune 500 executives--to serve on a new panel he has formed to understand better how U.S. innovation contributes to American economic prosperity and high living standards.
The Measuring Innovation in the 21st Century Economy Advisory Committee will help develop ways to measure innovation so that the public and policy makers can understand better its impact on economic growth and productivity. The committee will study metrics on effectiveness of innovation in various businesses and sectors, and work to identify which data can be used to develop a broader measure of innovation’s impact on the economy.
