Hello I have a spoon that is very ornate it is a sugar sifter and lovely the owner told me he tested it to be sterling????  On the back is the letters big R small d then these numbers55498  I would like to show you a picture of it , it is beautiful and has holes in the bowl of the spoon and than handle is very ornate as well.  If anyone has any knowledge of this I would appreciate it very much.

Actually, I`m a 'newbie' to spoon collecting, having inherited my collection from my mother, who also created her collection from travelling, and from friends who travelled to other countries too, and brought spoons back with them, to give to my mother.

But there are other ways to increase your collection, 'garage sales', swopping with other collectors, etc etc, and while in NZ, spoon collecting used to be a very popular hobby, it appears these day, that there is very little interest in collecting here, so spoons can be bought very cheaply, from online auction sites such as 'trademe', where the sell for only a fraction of their original retail cost.

I`m sure there is more to spoons, than just souvenir spoons, but not being knowledgeable enough on the subject yet, hopefully someone else can offer you worthwhile advise, 'without being idiots', to that question.

OK, sofar its just you and me, but at least by creating a club in this part of the world, we give the opportunity for others to join the club too, which must be of benefit to us all.

I`ve seen the occasional spoon collecting magazines for sale on trademe, and no doubt, with the interest in collecting spoons still  popular in other countries, I`m sure there are still spoon collecting magazines being produced, just need to be pointed in the right direction to where.

Will create an online club, and post the site address on here when its created.

Being new to this hobby, and not being able to find an 'active' Spoon collecting club in NZ, and wondering how many NZ members would be interested, if I was to create an online 'spoon collecting club' in NZ, for the benefit of NZers, and our Aussie neighbors, for the purpose of exchanging information, and anything else related to 'spoon collecting'?

The idea might be a 'dead duck', but worth the effort, if enough interest in the idea could be given.

I bought my wife a spoon display cabinet (glass fronted) from Spoon Collectors. She is very happy with this as a display, but has asked me if I will clean them for her. They are mostly silver spoons but I am not sure how to go about it.

Does anyone out there have any advice on cleaning my spoon collection? Ideally a method that is quick and not too fiddly.

I found a silver spoon -- tablespoon size -- engraved on the back with '1865 H Sears & Son' and the number '9' on it like it's a numbered piece - buried in our yard.

I've checked the Sears history sites and still can't find anything on this spoon.  Anyone have any information?

I have a collection of spoons for sale, from place souvenirs (e.g. Las Vegas, New York, Canada, Bethlehem, Tenerife etc.), to spoons with various 'designs' on them (e.g. ornate arm with bull on top; 1898 1942 World Fair; to a set of 1937 Coronation replica annointing spoons in a commemoration box; Prince Harry's birth commemorative spoon).  Any advice re. selling would be appreciated.

I have a complete set of Apostle Spoons issued by the South African Guild of Silversmiths in 1978. (Issue # 327)They are an authentic replica of 15th century originals inspired by sculptures on Chartres Cathedral in France. Only 2000 were issued.

They still have the certificate of authenticity, and original case they were issued in.

I would like to sell them, but would like to know what their value is.

I wish I had a camera but ... I have a teaspoon sized spoon with a hinged lid. 

The long sides of the lid have cut outs to allow liquid (?) to drain.

It was patented in 1892 and is most likely from Maine, USA as that's where my family is from. 

Do you know what it is??  It's too old to have been made to squeez out one's tea bag ... it also has the smallest overlapping lip on the lid, but only at the end of the spoon (opposite the handle).  I don't know the correct terms.  Excuse me.

I can't imagine using it to eat, and lemons would not be good for the silver.  What is is??
