NSTA Area Conference in Baltimore, MD
NOAA/NSTA Symposium: The Ocean's Role in Weather and Climate
Thursday, November 2, 2006
8:00 AM - 12:30 PM
Grades: 5-12
Baltimore Convention Center, Room 303
Presenters: Dr. Mike McPhaden, Scott Kiser, Sarah Schoedinger, Frank Niepold, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
Cost: $44 advance; $49 onsite
NSTA is partnering with NOAA to present an exciting Symposium for middle and high school level educators on the topic of the ocean's influence on weather and climate. This event is a blended professional development
opportunity including this face-to-face learning opportunity at the
conference followed by several online experiences -a discussion listserve
and two NSTA Web Seminars- extending the interactivity with NOAA staff.
This half-day symposium will focus on the interconnections among air, sea, and land; the processes by which energy is stored, released and transferred among them; and how our understanding and ability to monitor
ocean conditions is key to predicting climate change. Two phenomena will be presented: El Nino and Hurricanes. NOAA scientists and education specialists will share their expertise and assist participants in linking this content to hands-on, inquiry-based, classroom activities. All activities will address national science education standards topics.
All participants will receive educational materials and information regarding electronically available resources at NOAA. A raffle of fantastic prizes will take place at the end of the program. Refreshments will be provided. For additional information, and to register, visit the web site: http://institute.nsta.org/fall06/oceans/symposium.asp.

NOAA Creates Hurricane Education Site
"Preparation through education is less costly than learning through tragedy."
- Max Mayfield, Director, NOAA's National Hurricane Center
In time for the 2006 Hurricane Season, NOAA has created an education site for teachers that helps
teach about hurricanes. Teaching materials, multimedia visual information, an archive of previous
hurricane seasons and posters are available at this site.
History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common
threads among all major hurricane disasters. By knowing what actions you should
take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster.
This year Hurricane Preparedness Week is May 21-27, 2006.
