UNAIDS: AIDS EPIDEMIC UPDATE
UNAIDS and the World Health Organization's annual report on the global AIDS epidemic found that:
- The global AIDS epidemic continues to grow and there is concerning evidence that some countries are seeing resurgence in new HIV infection rates, which were previously stable or declining. However, declines in infection rates are also being observed in some countries, as well as positive trends in young people's sexual behaviors.
- At the end of 2006, an estimated 39.5 million people are living with HIV.
- There were 4.3 million new infections in 2006 with 2.8 million (65%) of these occurring in sub-Saharan Africa and important increases in Eastern Europe and Central Asia, where there are some indications that infection rates have risen by more than 50% since 2004.
- In 2006, 2.9 million people died of AIDS-related illnesses. Almost three quarters (72%) of all adult and child deaths due to AIDS in 2006 occurred in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Southern Africa continues to be one of the hardest hit regions on the continent: One third (32%) of all people with HIV globally live in southern Africa and 34% of all deaths due to AIDS in 2006 occurred there.
- In Africa, there were 2.8 million new infections in 2006 which is roughly 7700 new infections per day
- In Africa, there were 2.1 million deaths in 2006 which is roughly 5,800 deaths due to AIDS per day
