The earliest boats used for shrimping in Louisiana were based upon traditional Mediterranean fishing boats. These sailing boats were fitted with a centerboard, or hinged keel, and could operate in shallow waters. Boats commonly used today for shrimping the inland waters of the coast evolved from these early boats, as did the model we've created.

The larger, offshore shrimp boats used today are typically 50 to 65 feet long, have deep drafts and refrigeration. Steel hulled vessels powered by larger diesel-fueled engines are now common. These large shrimp boats are frequently rigged to tow two nets.

A third boat-type, the Lafitte skiff, is also used for shrimping on the Louisiana coast. Inspired by the World War II P.T. boats built in Louisiana, the Lafitte skiff is an adaptation of the basic skiff design. Traditionally built of marine plywood or cypress planks, they are now common in fiberglass and aluminum. They are typically between 18 and 45 feet long and are commonly built in small shipyards by specialists or individual fishermen.

From Texas, along the gulf coast and up the eastern seaboard, shrimp boats troll near shore waters in search of shrimp. Dragging the bottom of the sea for shrimp stirs up sea life, catching smaller fish and crabs. Part of the work of a shrimper is to separate the by-catch from the shrimp. Most shrimping is done through a good part of the night. Shrimpers will anchor, sometimes in groups, and go through their morning routine of cleaning equipment and washing by-catch over the stern.

Fishermen have reaped the benefits of Louisiana's marshes of the coastline since earliest settlement. Many of the shrimpers who fish seasonally live in settlements along the bayous of south Louisiana and along the lower Mississippi River. Louisiana's annual shrimp and oyster harvest supplies about 35 to 40 percent of the nation's needs.
